GHK-Cu is a small peptide naturally found in human plasma that declines significantly with age. It consists of three amino acids (glycine-histidine-lysine) bound to a copper ion, and this copper complex is essential for its biological activity. Originally discovered while studying wound healing, GHK-Cu has since been found to influence the expression of over 4,000 genes—switching many toward a more youthful pattern. In skin, it promotes collagen and elastin synthesis, increases blood vessel formation, and activates regenerative processes. Copper is a critical cofactor for enzymes involved in collagen synthesis (lysyl oxidase) and antioxidant defense (superoxide dismutase).
